The Three Things You Need to Reach Your Goals

The Three Things You Need to Reach Your Goals
by Rick Warren

“We plan the way we want to live, but only GOD makes us able to live it.”Proverbs 16:9 (MSG)

Proverbs 16:9 says, “We plan the way we want to live, but only GOD makes us able to live it” (MSG).
You get to plan the way you want to live, but only God gives you the power and energy to actually make the transformation. Why? Because God provides the three things you must have to reach your goal and change your life.
You need God’s Spirit to empower you.
You need God’s Spirit to empower you to make changes you can’t make on your own. It’s not based on willpower; it’s based on God power. It’s not based on trying; it’s based on trusting.
Zechariah 4:6 says, “‘You will not succeed by your own strength or by your own power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD All-Powerful” (NCV).
You need God’s Word to guide you.
The Bible is the owner’s manual for life. The more you read it, study it, memorize it, and meditate on it, the more successful and fulfilled you’re going to be in life.
When Joshua was given the great dream of taking over the Promised Land — a goal that was going to take him the rest of his life — God had these words to say to him: “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success” (Joshua 1:8 NASB).
You need God’s people to support you.
You will not be able to reach your goals on your own. It takes a team to fulfill a dream!
A crowd can’t support you, but a small group can. They know when you’re sick, when you’re having a tough time, when you need a break. You can share your goals and your successes and failures, and they will rejoice with you and encourage you to keep going. You’re going to need that when you make the right kind of goals and pursue them wholeheartedly.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped” (MSG).

Talk It Over
  • Why is it difficult for you to trust God’s Spirit to work in your life?
  • What do you need to do to make God’s Word a part of your daily life so that you can leverage its instruction and wisdom?
  • Who are the people around you, including your small group, on whom you can rely for support as you pursue your goals?

Let Go of What Didn’t Work Out
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me.”
(Psalm 131:1, NKJV)
TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
When things happen in your life that you don’t plan, do you find yourself trying to reason it all out, or looking for a place to file it all in your mind? What happens when you can’t find a “file” to put it in? What if you can’t make sense of it all?
Here’s the answer: Every one of us needs to create a file in our thinking called an “I Don’t Understand It” file. When things come up that don’t make sense or you can’t figure out, instead of getting frustrated or confused, simply put it in your “I Don’t Understand It” file and leave it alone. Especially at this time of year. Don’t start the New Year off with old frustrations. Don’t carry bitterness into your season of new beginnings. Don’t put a question mark where God has placed a period. Trust that He is good. Trust that He is working things out for your good. Keep believing, keep praying, keep hoping for the future. Let go of what didn’t work out in 2014 and get ready for the new season God has for you in 2015!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, today I surrender my questions; I surrender my past; I surrender my need to have all the answers. Today I choose to trust that You have all the answers, and You will reveal all things in time in Jesus’ name. Amen.

What to look for... =)

What to look for in your future spouse

Finding a spouse can be a daunting experience. Use this guide to help you find someone who can help make your marriage one that will last.

8,932 views   |   469 shares
  • As our oldest daughter reached dating age, my husband told her that when she first dates it is OK to date boys, but when she got older and she began looking for a spouse, she needed to date men. The way to know she was dating a man, he said, was a man knows what he wants to do with his life. He will have a plan.
Now that our sons are beginning to date, we have flipped this advice. Once you reach the age when you are searching for a spouse, you need to be a man with a plan. I have now added that they need to find a girl who is a pearl.
  • Man with a plan

What does it mean to be a man with a plan? A man with a plan means just that. He has a plan for his life. He is no longer flitting around without purpose or goals. A man with a plan has set a goal for his career. He knows what he wants to do and how to accomplish that. He is actively seeking to achieve these goals, not just dreaming about them.
However, a man with a plan is more than just that. He demonstrates the ability to make and keep commitments. He recognizes that the world does not revolve around him. In other words, he is not selfish. This means he is ready to enter into a relationship that is a true partnership in which both contribute to the happiness of the relationship.
  • Girl who’s a pearl

A pearl is a precious jewel. It is made layer by layer. So a girl who is a pearl is precious. She builds her character layer by layer as she grows and learns. What characteristics would such a girl possess? She is virtuous and pure. She has learned the importance of hard work and does not shirk responsibility. Her life experiences have shaped her into the woman she is.
A girl who is a pearl understands the need to be supportive of her spouse. She has learned that she needs to put the needs of the relationship before her own personal interests.
She also seeks the best education or training she can receive. This enables her to be equally yoked with her spouse. She knows that developing her own talents and intelligence makes her a better partner.
Inherent in this search for a man with a plan or a girl who’s a pearl, is the need for the one searching to become one. You cannot expect to find someone with these characteristics without developing them yourself.
Along with these characteristics, seek in your spouse someone with the same degree of religious commitment. This is important for when you have children. Your children will benefit from your strong religious foundation. This commitment needs to be established early in the relationship. Hoping someone will change or even if they promise to change, will not guarantee that change will happen. In fact, it most likely will not.
Remember this advice as you begin your search for a spouse. Seek someone with the same goals, same commitment and same faith. Be a man with a plan or a girl who’s a pearl and in so doing you will find one.

What Kind of Goal Does God Bless?

What Kind of Goal Does God Bless?
By Rick Warren — December 29, 2014
12.27.14_Email-Devotional-Banner-transformed-logo-only

“When you eat or drink or do anything else, always do it to honor God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (CEV)

Not every goal that you can set is a good goal and one that God’s going to bless.
So how do you know the kind of goal that God will bless? Ask yourself these questions:
“Will my goal honor God?”
What kind of goal brings glory to God? Any goal that causes you to trust him more, to depend on him more, to love him more, to love other people more, to serve God, to serve others, to be more unselfish.
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:31, “When you eat or drink or do anything else, always do it to honor God” (CEV). Everything can be done to honor God. You can take out the garbage to honor God. You can wash dishes to honor God. You can study for a test to honor God. How? By doing it with the right motive: gratitude. You want your life to bring honor to God, so your goals should help you be the best you can be for God’s glory.
“Is my goal motivated by love?”
God is not going to bless a goal motivated by greed, envy, guilt, fear, or pride. But he does honor your goal that is motivated by a desire to demonstrate love to him and to others, because life is all about learning how to love.
Why is it important for you to have goals that are based on love? Because if you set loveless goals, you’re going to treat people as projects. You’re going to run all over them to get to your goal. You’re going to run over your marriage, your friends, and other people as you climb up the ladder of success. God says, “No. You’ve got it all wrong. It’s not about accomplishments. It’s about relationships. It’s about learning how to love.”
“Do everything in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14 NIV). The number one goal in your life should be to learn to really love — your family, neighbors, unlovely people, and those who are hard to love. That makes you more like God, because God is love.

Talk It Over
  • What goals have you set for yourself for the next year? How do they hold up under these two questions?
  • How does your attitude toward the menial tasks of your day change when you consider that everything can be done to honor God?
  • How do the small moments of your life contribute to the bigger picture of your goals to achieve God’s purpose for your life?
Let Him Order
Your Steps
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“...nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
(Luke 22:42, NKJV)
TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
Like most people at this time of year, you are probably thinking about some pretty big dreams and goals. That’s great. We should. But no matter what has happened in the past or what you’re dreaming for in the future, why don’t you let your New Year’s prayer be, “God, not my will, but Yours be done.”
Maybe you’ve gone through a disappointment. You don’t understand it. You could easily be bitter and give up on your dreams. Realize today that God is at work in your life. He is directing your steps. What you thought was a setback is going to turn out to be a setup for a comeback! When you surrender your will to Him, when you humble yourself before Him, that’s when God can take you to another level. Let your prayer be, “Not my will, but Yours be done.”
Today, as we finish the last few days of 2014, know that God has you in the palm of His hand. He has good plans in store for your future! Surrender to His will, trust Him with your whole heart, and let Him order your steps in the New Year!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, today I surrender every area of my heart, mind and life to You. Have Your way in me. Order my steps and let everything I am bring glory to You in Jesus’ name! Amen.

Every Life Matters
by Rick Warren

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)

All life is sacred. It is the mentality of “some lives matter more than others” that caused the Holocaust. That was the mentality of Hitler: “Some people are more important than others. So we’ll just wipe out the weak, the infirm, the aged, or people we disagree with.” Today we even see it in young couples that are expecting and hear, “We hate to tell you this, but your baby may have a birth defect.” And the couple starts considering abortion.
If everybody who had a defect were aborted, you would have been aborted. You have defects. Everybody is handicapped. You just don’t admit it. You have some emotional handicaps, and you have some fears you won’t even talk to your wife about. They scare you to death. You also have emotional handicaps, such as the idea that you’re not as smart as everybody else. And you have some physical handicaps. Have you learned that not everything in your body works? That’s why you’re not in the Olympics. We all have defects. We all have problems.
Who makes the decision that your defect isn’t big enough to get rid of? Do you know a family who has a special needs child — an autistic, mentally undeveloped, or physically handicapped child? Do they love that child less? No. They love that child more! The Bible says that God loves the weak, the infirm, the special needs person. We need them in our lives to learn unselfishness.
We must always protect the sanctity of life. Why? Because it reveals God’s purpose and shows God’s glory.
You are valuable, no matter who or what you are. So is every child.
The Bible tells us that God accepts responsibility for all our genetic defects. Did you know that? Not the problems in our lives we brought on ourselves because of overeating or smoking or drinking too much, but all the genetic weaknesses that you didn’t have any say in are all part of your SHAPE.
The Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (NIV).
God accepts responsibility, because he has a bigger perspective than any human. He can see what you can’t see. And he loves each person he made for their potential to do the great things he has planned for us.
God isn’t going to compare you with anybody else. But he is going to compare you with your potential. It’s not my goal to be the best pastor in the world. I’m not even trying. It’s my goal to be the best pastor I can possibly be given the talent, background, opportunities, and gifts that God gave me. That’s what I’ll be evaluated on.

Talk It Over
  • To whom have you been comparing yourself? What is it about that person that makes you think he or she is better than you are or that God loves him or her more?
  • Is it enough for you to know that God considers your life sacred? Why or why not?

Nothing Wasted
Today's Scripture:
Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion.
Psalm 103:4, NIV

Today's Word:
I know people who feel like they’ve wasted years of their lives because of poor choices. They spent years in a relationship that was toxic, years with an addiction, years at a job where they weren’t fulfilled. But you have to realize, nothing you have been through is ever wasted. Your past experiences, good and bad, have deposited something on the inside of you. Those challenges have sharpened you to help make you who you are today. When the enemy brings hardship into your life, God has a way of taking that experience and turning it around for your advantage. You may think you’ve hit a dead end, but if you’ll stay in faith, you will see God begin to open up a new route. He’ll put the right people in your path, the right opportunities, the right circumstances to move you forward toward the blessing God has in store for you!

Today, don’t focus on what’s happened in your past, focus on what God will do in your future. He wants to restore your soul and revive your dreams. Keep believing, keep expecting, keep hoping because God has a new route for your future!

Prayer for Today:
Father, I come humbly before You today. I give You my past, present and future, knowing that You will redeem my life. I release those who have hurt me. I choose forgiveness so I can be free to move forward in the path You have for me in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Before getting married =)

10 Questions To Ask Before Getting Married

Wedding season is just around the corner and marriage should not be taken lightly. If you are planning to get married in the near future you may wonder if you are ready to get married.

10 Questions To Ask Before Getting Married
Here are a few questions that may help you assessing your situation:
Why are you getting married?
Just because you have always wanted to get married is not reasonable. Figure out the reasons you want to spend the rest of your life with this person, and make sure their flaws are flaws you can live with.
How will you raise children? Or stepchildren, if one or both of you already have them
Discuss thoroughly as a team whether or not you want kids. If your answer is yes discuss how you will raise them. What are your expectations from your partner as a parent? Are you compatible enough to agree on parenting styles? Will one of you stay home with them? Which one?
How will you handle financial matters?
Who is going to pay for groceries, cable, the mortgage, utilities, insurance, phone, travel, entertainment, and child care? Will you divide expenses in half or according to an equitable schedule according to how much each person makes? Will you have joint or separate accounts or both? Marriage includes regular debts and responsibilities. You need to know how much you will be able to spend on your own without consulting your spouse, if you will discuss bigger items together.
What about your sex life?
You should discuss and plan your sex life, if you are compatible in frequency and fidelity, how you will keep it fresh, and how you will handle changes. You should also thoroughly discuss boundaries and fetishes.
Will your partner be supportive?
Most of us want a partner who supports our hopes, dreams, and lifestyle we wish for. Make sure you agree about future education, places you want to live, and any major changes you hope for later.
Is it the right time?
Everything in life should take place at the right time for the people involved. If you cannot afford the life or wedding you want you can postpone it for a year or two, if you are getting married just because there is a baby coming make sure that you really love each other and want to be married to each other, it is possible to be effective co-parents without being married if that is not what you want.
How compatible are you?
You should share common goals and some interests to live a happy life together. If you do not agree on money, religion, politics, childcare, caring for aging parents, charity work, and how to spend free time it can cause friction. You do not need to agree on everything, but you do need to respect each other’s differences.
Do you trust him/her?
Trust is a basic fundamental of a healthy relationship. If they have proved untrustworthy in the past marriage will not suddenly change them. Be sure of your choice and be proud of your spouse.
Communication styles
Will you be able to communicate openly? How will you resolve disputes? Will you discuss everything daily or weekly? Decide how much space you need and how much you are ready to give.
What do you expect from marriage and from your partner?
Discuss openly what you both need and want from your relationship. Will you be able to live up to your partner’s expectations? Will they be able to meet yours? Marriage is an ongoing lifestyle, you must both be willing to grow and change your marriage as you grow and develop yourself, keep current with what your roles are and what you both want.

Accept Yourself — Flaws and All
by Rick Warren

“My friend, I ask, ‘Who do you think you are to question God? Does the clay have the right to ask the potter why he shaped it the way he did?’” (Romans 9:20 CEV)

Spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, experiences — these are the five things that make you, you. I call them your SHAPE.
Accepting your SHAPE — the unique way that God made you that brings glory to him — means to believe that God knows best. It all comes down to the matter of trust. Do you believe that God made a mistake when he made you? Or do you trust him, knowing that he has a plan for your life? Do you believe it?
When you say, “God, there are things I don’t like about myself. I wish I had different hair or a different color of skin. I wish I were taller, shorter, skinnier. I wish I had more talent. I wish I could do ‘that.’ I wish I looked like him. I wish I had her smarts” and on and on. This kind of thinking is basically telling God, “You blew it! Everybody else is OK. But you goofed up big when you made me.”
When you reject yourself, you are in essence rejecting God, because he’s your creator. When you don’t accept yourself, it’s rebellion against God. You’re saying, “God, I know better than you. You should have made me different, with a different set of strengths and a different set of weaknesses.”
But God says, “No, I made you exactly to be you because I want you to be you — with your strengths and your weaknesses. Both of them can give me glory — if you’ll just start doing what I made you to do instead of trying to be like everybody else.”
It’s actually quite arrogant to reject yourself. The Bible says in Romans 9:20, “My friend, I ask, ‘Who do you think you are to question God? Does the clay have the right to ask the potter why he shaped it the way he did?’” (CEV)
Whenever we doubt God’s love and wisdom, we always get into trouble. The root behind all of your problems is that you don’t trust God. You don’t believe God really loves you. You don’t believe that he really has your best interest at heart. You wish he had made you something different. As a result, there’s a spirit of bitterness in you that keeps you frustrated and keeps you from being all the man/woman God meant for you to be.
Job 10:10 says, “You guided my conception and formed me in the womb” (NLT). God wanted you, and he loves you. Believe it, and then trust it!

Talk It Over
  • Do you believe that God really loves you? How does that change the way you view yourself?
  • What is it about yourself that you've always wanted to change? How might God have intended to use that very trait to bring glory to him?
Magnify the Lord
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:
O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
Psalm 34:3, KJV
TODAY'S WORD:
Something powerful happens inside when you magnify the Lord. What does it mean to magnify the Lord? When you magnify Him, you aren’t changing Him; you are changing the way you see Him. You are making Him bigger in your life than your problems and circumstances.

So many people today waste time and energy talking about their problems and feeling sorry for themselves. That’s because they are magnifying their circumstances in their own mind and heart. But when you start magnifying the Lord by talking about Him and worshiping Him, you are making Him the main priority in your life and opening the door for Him to move on your behalf.

Today, decide that no matter what’s going on in life around you, you are going to magnify your God. Talk about His goodness. Talk about His faithfulness. Declare that He is working behind the scenes on your behalf. Exalt His name today and lift Him up and see His hand of blessing in every area of your life!
PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Heavenly Father, today I choose to magnify and exalt You. You are faithful and good. Help me to keep my heart and mind focused on You all the days of my life in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Good News of Christmas
by Rick Warren

“There is only one God, and Christ Jesus is the only one who can bring us to God. Jesus was truly human, and he gave himself to rescue all of us.” (1 Timothy 2:5 CEV)

Christmas is all about good news. But it’s not the good news of special gifts. It’s not the good news of a big meal. It’s not even the good news of spending time with friends and family.
Christmas is about the Good News of God’s love.
The Bible says all of us are lost without God. We’re directionless. We’re without protection. Our potential eternal impact upon the world is unrealized. We’re without real joy. Our eternity in Heaven isn’t secure.
The Good News about Christmas is that God sent Jesus to seek and save the lost. The Bible says, “There is only one God, and Christ Jesus is the only one who can bring us to God. Jesus was truly human, and he gave himself to rescue all of us” (1 Timothy 2:5 CEV).
If you’ve ever spent time in church, you’ve likely heard the word “salvation” many times. But you may not know what it means. The word is like a diamond; you can look at it from many different angles.
  • Jesus came to rescue us. We can’t solve all of our problems on our own. Without Jesus, we’re trapped in the expectations of others. We’re trapped in living for the approval of our peers. We’re trapped in addictions. We’ve tried to change over and over again, but we don’t have the power needed to escape. Jesus came to give us that power.
  • Jesus came to recover us. We all long to recover parts of our lives that have been lost. Without Christ, we long to recover our strength, our confidence, our reputation, our innocence, and our relationship with God. Only Jesus can do that.
  • Jesus came to reconnect us. Many people think that God will scold them if they come back to him. But God isn’t mad at you. He’s mad about you. Jesus came to Earth on the first Christmas to reconcile us to God, to give us harmony with him again.
Jesus came to Earth to give us the gift of himself. Too many of us celebrate his birthday without accepting this free gift of salvation. It goes unwrapped year after year after year. That’s not smart! You were made by God and for God. Until you understand that, life will never make sense.
This Christmas, open up the most important present you’ve been given: a new relationship with God through Jesus.

Talk It Over
  • Which of the above facets of salvation has been the most important in your relationship with God? Why?
  • How can you “unwrap” God’s gift of Jesus this Christmas? In what ways can you tell others about this gift?
  • What can you do to better celebrate Jesus’ birthday?
"The Prince of Peace"
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:
"…and his name shall be called…The Prince of Peace."
Isaiah 9:6, KJV
TODAY'S WORD:
Jesus doesn’t just have peace; He is peace. With Jesus, we can have peace when things around us aren’t peaceful. We can have peace in the midst of the storm. We can have peace when gas prices go up and the housing market goes down. We can have peace that passes understanding because we are connected to the true source of peace—the Prince of Peace!

Do you need peace in any area of your life today? Call on the Prince of Peace. Give Him your burdens and cares. Focus on His goodness knowing that He is working behind the scenes on your behalf. Let His peace lead and guide you. You don’t have to be worried about anything. When God gives you peace, nothing in the world can take it away. Choose today to walk and live in His perfect peace every day of your life!
PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Father, thank You for Your peace that passes understanding. I receive Your peace knowing that Your plans are for my good. I cast my cares on You and thank You for leading me and guiding me in Jesus name. Amen

What It Means to Be Lost
by Rick Warren
“The Son of Man came to find lost people and save them.” (Luke 19:10NCV)

If you don’t understand the purpose of Christmas, you might as well skip the Christmas lights and decorations this year. You might as well forget about buying Christmas presents. You might as well forget Christmas dinner.
If you don’t know why we celebrate Christmas, all the festivities are pointless.
To find the purpose of Christmas, you have to fast forward beyond the manger, the Wise Men, and the shepherds. Jesus told us the reason he came to Earth on the first Christmas: “The Son of Man came to find lost people and save them” (Luke 19:10 NCV).
Quite simply, Jesus came because people are lost without God. To be spiritually lost means to be separated from God, disconnected, and out of whack. Without Jesus, everybody in the world is lost — no matter how much power, wealth, or fame they have.
And our lostness has immense ramifications on our lives. To know why Jesus came to Earth, we must understand what it means to be lost. Without God, we’ve lost:
  • Our direction. We’re bound to have little understanding of where we should go and what we should do in this life.
  • His protection. We’re on our own when we’re not under the Lord’s protection. That’s a huge reason many people are stressed out. They’re trying to live under their own care and protection instead of God’s.
  • Our potential. We’ll never know half the gifts and talents we have if we’re not in a relationship with him.
  • Our happiness. We can have all the money and power in the world, but without God we will never have true joy.
  • Our home in Heaven. God allows us to rebel while we’re here on Earth, but there’s no rebellion in Heaven.
But no one who is lost has lost one ounce of value to God. Even if you don’t have a relationship with him, you have immense value to God. Lostness implies value. Whatever someone is willing to spend to recover something that’s lost shows how valuable that item is.
In the most famous verse in the Bible, Jesus clearly explains our value: “God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
The Good News is God loved us so much he sent his Son to Earth on the first Christmas to seek and save us. That’s a reason to celebrate!

Talk It Over
  • How can you keep a perspective this Christmas that goes beyond the holiday season and helps you remember the meaning of God’s gift of Jesus?
  • What changes for you when you understand that Christmas is about God seeking and saving the lost?
  • How do your Christmas celebrations reflect the true meaning of the holiday?

Whoever
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
John 3:16, NKJV
TODAY'S WORD:
When God sent His Son to the earth, He opened the door of salvation to whoever would believe. That means anyone can become His child and have a personal relationship with Him.

Before Jesus came, people had to observe many laws in order to be holy enough to enter into the temple. They were constantly performing sacrifices to pay for their sins just so they could be around God’s presence. But when Jesus came, He was the final sacrifice. He paid for our sins once and for all. Now, instead of just going to the temple to be near God, the Bible says we are the temple, and He chooses to live inside of us!

As we celebrate Christmas together, remember, Jesus is the ultimate gift to us—the gift of everlasting life. If you’ve never made Jesus the Lord of your life, there’s no better time than today because whoever calls on the name of Jesus will be saved! Pray today’s prayer from your heart and receive the greatest gift!
PRAYER FOR TODAY:
Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to this earth so that I can have a relationship with You. Today I call on the name of the Lord. I receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Come into my heart and make me new in Jesus’ name. Amen.
