2 Timothy 4:2

Give God Everything

Christ’s Prayer on the Cross

by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”
Luke 23:32–34
In the four Gospels, we find seven statements Jesus made while He hung on the cross. The very first of those is this powerful prayer for forgiveness of those who were crucifying Him. Charles Spurgeon said, “It was not a prayer for enemies who had done him an ill deed years before, but for those who were there and then murdering him. Not in cold blood did the Saviour pray, after He had forgotten the injury, but while the first red drops of blood were spurting on the hands which drove the nails; while yet the hammer was bestained with crimson gore, His blessed mouth poured out the fresh warm prayer.”
Christ’s forgiveness for those who were in that moment crucifying Him is an incredible revelation of the depth of God’s love. He does not love us because we are good or deserving, but because He is love and, in love, paid the price for our sins. We need a renewed sense of appreciation and gratitude for the salvation we have received. Especially for those of us who have been saved for many years, the temptation is to take salvation for granted and forget how much we needed it. “But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins” (2 Peter 1:9).
But Christ’s prayer on the cross should also motivate us who have received the forgiveness of God to freely forgive others. Ephesians 4:32 says, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Today’s Growth Principle:
Never forget the amazing love of Jesus who prayed for your salvation even on the cross, and never withhold forgiveness from others.

Give God Everything

by Joyce Meyer - posted October 30, 2016

For those whom He foreknew . . . He also destined from the beginning . . . to be molded into the image of His Son [and share inwardly His likeness].
- Romans 8:29

If we really are serious about loving God, we must ask ourselves if there are any areas of our lives in which we are holding out on Him. What are the things about which we say, "Well, God, You can have everything but that," or "Lord, just don't ask me to quit doing that"?
God doesn't want to take everything we enjoy away from us, but everything must be available to Him. He makes the choices about what is really good for us and what is not; our job is to trust Him completely.
According to today's Scripture, one of God's primary goals in our lives is to make us like Jesus. This means that He wants us to continue to become more like Jesus in our thoughts, in our words, and in our actions.
God has given us a free will, and the only way we will ever belong to Him is to make deliberate decisions to give ourselves freely to Him. He will never force us to love Him or serve Him. He will lead us and prompt us, but He will always leave the decision to surrender up to us. If God has been dealing with you about anything, I encourage you not to put off surrendering it any longer. In your thoughts you may intend to surrender at some later time, but remember that good intentions do not equal obedience—and obedience is not only what God requires, it's also what proves our love for Him.
Love God Today: Go ahead and do it: Give God everything.

A Good Conversation between 2 Christians

Carrying the Cross of Jesus

Carrying the Cross of Jesus

by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.”
Luke 23:26–28
Though Rembrandt van Rijn is best known to us as a painter, it is his drypoint etching “The Three Crosses” that many art scholars consider his finest work. The work depicts the Lord on the cross with the thieves on either side. Light from Heaven shines in the center of the picture, but the edges are dark. At the very edge of the picture stands a figure in the shadows representing the artist himself—which apparently was Rembrandt’s recognition of the fact that his sin was responsible for the death of the Lord.
Under Roman law, soldiers could force anyone they encountered to carry burdens for them. When Jesus was unable to bear the weight of His cross because of the physical suffering He had already endured, a man named Simon was picked out of the crowd and compelled to carry the cross for Jesus. He became part of the crucifixion story simply because he was passing by at the moment Jesus was taken out of the city, but in a very real sense each one of us is also part of the story.
It was your sin and my sin that resulted in the necessity of the cross. Jesus died for the sins of the world, but He also died for me. Though the crucifixion happened centuries before we were born, we were part of the events of that day, as Jesus died for our sins, just as much as those who stood there physically when Jesus died.
Today’s Growth Principle:
If we see the cross without seeing ourselves in the picture, we have failed to grasp the point.

How to Be Happy

by Joyce Meyer - posted October 29, 2016

Having gifts (faculties, talents, qualities) that differ according to the grace given us, let us use them.
- Romans 12:6

We are all gifted and graced differently to operate in the gifts God has given us. Today’s verse says we are to use our gifts according to the grace that is upon us.
Two people can be gifted to teach, yet one may be a stronger teacher than the other because he or she has more grace from God for that particular calling. Why? Because the Holy Spirit distributes gifts to whomever He wills (see 1 Corinthians 12:11). He has His reasons for what He does, and we need to trust Him in that. We should be thankful for what He gives us and not become jealous of someone else’s gift. We cannot walk in love with people and envy their gifts at the same time.
My husband could be jealous because God has given me a preaching gift that He did not give him. Dave realized a long time ago that he would not be happy if he tried to operate outside of the grace that has been given to him. If he tried to be who I am, he would lose his joy. Dave is anointed in administration and finances, and his part in our ministry is just as important as mine.
If you want to be really happy, give yourself to what you are called and graced to do. The Holy Spirit will speak to you about what you are to do and help you understand the grace you have been given. Don’t be jealous of others, but walk in love toward them and in faithfulness to the calling and grace on your life.
God’s word for you today: You are an awesome person with tremendous gifts and abilities, and you don’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.

Courage or Cowardice?

Courage or Cowardice?

by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.”
Luke 23:22–24
Edmund G. Ross of Kansas had only been in the United States Senate for two years when he faced one of the most important decisions of his life. President Andrew Johnson had been impeached by a Congress filled with those who opposed his position on reuniting the nation following the Civil War. Thirty-six votes were needed to convict Johnson and remove him from office, and the vote counters knew they had thirty-five certain votes for conviction. They put enormous pressure on Ross to be the deciding vote, but he insisted on hearing all of the evidence before reaching a conclusion.
When the day came, Ross voted “not guilty,” and by one vote Johnson retained his office. Of the crucial moment when he cast his vote Ross later said, “I looked into my open grave. Friendships, position, fortune, and everything that makes life desirable to an ambitious man were about to be swept away by the breath of my mouth, perhaps forever.” Ross lost his Senate seat in the next election and was ostracized by those who had once been his most ardent supporters. But he did what he believed was right and was vindicated by history.
There are times when doing right comes with a high price. In those moments if we consider the price that Jesus paid for us, we will find strength and courage to do right. God does not promise us painless service, but He does promise rewards to those who are faithful.
Today’s Growth Principle:
If we are not willing to take a stand and pay the price, we will not do what is right when it matters most.

A Kind Reward

by Joyce Meyer - posted October 28, 2016

But love your enemies and be kind and do good [doing favors so that someone derives benefit from them] and lend, expecting and hoping for nothing in return but considering nothing as lost and despairing of no one; and then your recompense (your reward) will be great (rich, strong, intense, and abundant).
- Luke 6:35
Has God ever asked you to do something really special for somebody who hurt you? If so, I am sure that like me you found it very difficult to do. Perhaps you have spent a lot of time in your life blessing someone who never blesses you in return. In that case, don’t become bitter but trust God to reward you.
Some of us are a little more naturally disposed toward kindness than others. Many of us find we can be kind to those who are kind to us, but we run into trouble with those we don’t think deserve kindness. God delights in being kind to those of us who don’t deserve it. Actually, kindness isn’t even kindness unless it is extended toward the undeserving.
End your day by being kind to someone.

Something to Ponder

2.PONDER ON THIS...

Written by Gary Stayes, a US citizen

"As an American observer, I would strongly urge him to break ties with the U.S. outside of basic diplomatic relations. The U.S. is primarily interested in involving the Philippines in another colonial game of Risk. You want to rid the Philippines of drugs and prostitution? Keep American military bases far, far away. Once the American military is able to establish bases, they will insist upon selling your government equipment that they cannot afford.

The Philippines is fortunate in that it does not really have a need for a navy or large standing army. Want to keep it that way? Again, keep out the U.S. military. Unless you too want to be dragged into global wars of conquest, regime change, have your government plunge further into debt and risk increased terrorism blow back, urge Duterte to not align with Washington. What does my country primarily export to the world that's so useful? Pornography, garbage music, mindless sports fanaticism and violence. America is also the world's largest arms dealer and guess who they'd love to sell to?

Obama is not a man to admire. Some of you spineless, weak-willed people complain about drug dealers and addicts being gunned down as if it is so horrible and barbaric. What's worse? Leaving the drug trade alone to continue to flourish and increasingly ruin your country or to eliminate it by killing the criminals?

Duterte isn't really your problem, it is the long line of leaders you've elected who took money to look the other way while it continued. So why would Washington be against extra judicial killings that they themselves do routinely? It isn't the deaths they're worried about, after all, what do dead Filipinos matter to them?

Why is it none of you remember you fought and lost against Washington during the Philippine-American war? They admit to murdering well over a million men, women and children, but other sources place it over 3 million. How come you don't learn that in your American organized education system? Is it because Washington loves you so much? Washington's involvement in Vietnam came about not because of France's colonial problems in the region, but because Washington was involved in opium sales. Having communists stand up and try to free themselves from this was a threat as Washington used this money to fund CIA programs to overthrow governments hostile to its political will. The British first had control over the opium production and sales in China. The opium wars permitted Britain to solidify control over much of China by using arms to force Chinese into buying and using opium (look it up). America took over this trade from Britain after WWI.

Washington decided to protect its drug trade with CNAC (China National Aviation Corporation) by establishing Chenault's Flying Tigers. They are not heroes, but illegal mercenaries used to protect this trade from Japanese air power that was trying to eliminate it. During Vietnam, the drug trade was revived and a new corporation was formed named Air America. They began literally shipping in heroin from Cambodia and Laos. They paid those farmers to grow heroin and gave them rice so they didn't have to grow it.

In the 80's, the CIA moved to Central & South America because Cocaine products were easier to ship in without an opposing communist government resisting by shooting down planes. Drug selling is as American as Apple Pie. Because drugs are so profitable, we have legalized drugs called pharmaceuticals. Some of which still are made from opium.

In reality, Duterte is seen as an enemy for cutting into this long history and profitable drug trade. His killing of addicts (customers) and dealers (salesman) cuts into the profit margin that is in turn invested in Wall Street and deposited into big transnational banks. Many of our politicians rely on campaign money from Wall Street and these mega banks.

Duterte is going to create financial pain for Washington as more nations decide to eliminate drug use by their own war on drugs.

You see the problem?!

How many of you can name countries China or Russia have invaded?

How many countries do they have drones flying over to launch missiles at people they declare terrorists?

Russia and China are building economic ties that do not include using the U.S. Dollar. Russia is openly fighting ISIS while America is well known to have funded and trained the groups that formed ISIS. Do you want to be aligned with all that? Those of you who see Duterte's possible alignment with Russia and China should know that it will likely bring about peace and prosperity down the road.

The failed American empire is beyond broke and has a military that can no longer field aircraft that function properly, ships that break down at sea and is initiating hostilities all over the globe in an effort to revive itself through another world war where it can assert control over defeated enemies, as it did after WWII. Maybe you don't like Duterte's methods, but his actions have a purpose. Instead of crying over dead criminals and drug addicts, maybe you should be concerned over your own future if he fails."

3.) . . .the act speaks for itself . . . while I personally have my reservations about the Chinese . . .  This account speaks of a truth that many need to know and understand . . .

I receive this from my classmates whose Mother was asked what she thinks of President Duterte's comments about siding with China:

From Nong Diaz, just thought you might want to know. "Oct. 22, 2016. My mother, now 93 still has a sharp mind and I always get good insights from her. I asked her about her thoughts on the China alliance of Pres. Digong. Her reply is simple. Digong saved our country! I probed what she meant. She said if we are solidly allied with the US today, the Philippines will be devastated again if war erupts between China and US. She said the war of the US with Japan in WW2 was not our war. But when war with Japan was imminent in 1941, US President Roosevelt gave instruction to integrate the Philippine Commonwealth Army into the US army which became known as the US Army Force in the Far East (USAFFE). Pres. Quezon acceeded which technically committed the Phils to fight the war alongside the US. Since the Japanese could not invade the US mainland or its Hawaii territory being too far away, they instead invaded the US ally in the pacific – Philippines. Our country was devastated and many of mom’s relatives and friends have died fighting for the US. When it was over, the US poured money into Japan and left us, their ally, with their army jeeps to become jeepneys. The USAFFE was terminated in 1947 without benefits to the USAFFE veterans. And when nearly all the USAFFE veterans have died, the US finally released the benefits of veterans after almost 50 years. My father was a USAFFE B26 pilot so mom is very informed of this topic. She then says if the US goes to war with China and with the Philippines remaining a strong US ally and is even showing China that it is doing joint military excercises on land and joint patrol in the China sea, it is again making the Filipinos its pawn and the battleground should war erupts will again be the Philippines. Tapos na ang Pilipinas! PNoy and Del Rosario were actually following the same commitment of Quezon to fight China alongside the US forces. Duterte’s economic alliance with China makes us their friend. He brought along more than 400 busnessmen in his China visit because he wants to have as many new joint Chinese investments and businesses created in the Philippines. In this way, China will also protect their Philippine investment and will spare us if the war with the US erupts. Hence more jobs will also be created and Filipinos need not search for employment as domestics abroad. Being a friend of China makes plenty of sense. Mom’s view.
07:57

Really makes sense to me, now we know coming from the heart of a Mother who cares about our future.

Something worth reading. Copied and pasted from previous post.
Why President Duterte is pursuing an independent foreign policy?
By: Lily Sobrepena
Understanding Duterte’s Position on South China Sea vs. The Interest of the West The South China Sea area is actually more important to the US and Europe than to the Philippines. Lying in that vast body of water is an international waterway where 5 Trillion US Dollars in global trade passes every year going to the Western countries. If China controls the whole stretch of the waterway, including overflight thereon, global trade to Europe and US will become more expensive. The adverse impact of it to the west will be very costly. This explains why US and Europe were supportive of the Philippines and they were all urging China to respect the decision of the Permanent Arbitral Tribunal favoring Philippines on our claim.
Duterte’s position on the issue however, is not subservient to the West. When he declared that he is pursuing an independent foreign policy, he is bent on negotiating with China directly instead of becoming confrontational as the West wants him to be. Duterte is aware that our court victory is an empty one for lack of enforcement mechanisms on the decision. Neither the US nor the west and even any of the UN instrumentalities can help the Philippines enforce that decision. It solely relies on China’s recognition for which it has already repeatedly rejected. If we decide to confront China by force, which country will come to help us?
The NATO military arsenal cannot be stretched to the South china sea because its forces are confined to Europe in an attempt to contain the Russian military flexing in Europe and mid-east. Germany will never come to aid the Philippines because of its trading relations with China. France will be a reluctant potential ally because of the external threats it has been facing. Great Britain will never send its military planes to the Philippines because it has been courting China for trading relations as an aftermath of the Brexit.
If we use diplomacy, particularly by bringing the issue to the halls of the UN and asking the members to enjoin China into accepting the decision, we should take note of the fact that more than half of the countries in the UN are having trading relations with China for which they cannot afford to severe ties with, much less with ASEAN. What we see here is purely “politics among nations” at work and Philippines must be careful on its approach and for which Duterte has shown a great deal of expertise in terms of diplomatic maneuvering. Given that scenario, we are left with US and Japan at our side to help us in our confrontation with China. However, America is heavily indebted to China and the level of its trading relations with China outweighs any possibility for any war between the two.
But the more serious question which should bug us is this: Is US really a true ally in this conflict? When Duterte brought out the issue on Bud Dajo Massacre in 1906, he wanted the Filipinos to revisit our alliance with the US in the light of his intention to adopt an independent foreign policy. During World War II in 1941, we fought side by side with America where we lost more than a million Filipino lives. It was never our war, yet we were invaded by Japan because America was with us. After the war, US government helped Japan in its reconstruction efforts financially and economically until it became the world’s second largest economy next to US until to date. What happened to the Philippines as an ally which gave up more than a million lives defending America? While a miniscule of assistance were given to us since World War II, these were handed out with strings attached and were designed to continue US interference in our internal affairs.
Now, America and its allies in Europe want to use us again as a pawn to serve its economic and political interest in the South China Sea – to keep that international water way navigation-free. On the other hand, our main interest in the area is fishing right as well as exploiting the rich mineral resources underneath. From all indications, China is mainly interested in the control over that stretch of international waterway militarily as part of its hegemony over the region. Duterte believes that by negotiating directly with China using the decision of the court as our leverage, we can get most of what we want. However, Duterte believes that we cannot successfully negotiate with China if we remain under the shadow of Uncle Sam. Hence, the need to project an independent image to convince China that we are negotiating with them in good faith sans any influence from the West. This left US and Europe in quandary on how to protect their interest over South China Sea with the revolting posture of Duterte.
The only way is to get Duterte out and replace him with a pro west Philippine President. This partly explains why the West is anti Duterte and all forces including traitors from our country are now in global conspiracy to get him out of the presidency by using all sorts of issues to discredit him, e.g. his foul mouth, extra judicial killings, hitler image, and many more to come. For all of us Filipinos, including Anti Duterte forces, the President has just expressed a long overdue rebuke on the US shabby treatment to our country as an ally in the Asia Pacific. He wants US and Europe to treat us well as co-equal. America owed our country big time based on historical accounts and Duterte wants US to realize that and pay our country even with interest. If US made Japan as the second largest economy in the world post world war II and after all the damage Japan has inflicted US and our land, why didn’t US help Philippines as much as Japan if our country is a true ally? Sanamagan.
Filipinos should realize that there is more to the issues of EJK and the foul mouth of the President as systematically magnified by the West and their collaborators in our country, including both local and international media. We should “look at the forest, not just the trees”. The West wants Duterte out of the presidency for his anti-west sentiments and for his refusal to protect the interest of the west – that’s the crux of the matter and that’s what’s behind all these shenanigans. It’s a grand conspiracy to discredit him internationally because of the massive support he enjoys from our country’s masses. It’s a clear imperialistic design concocted by the West and swallowed hook line and sinker by political prostitutes and opportunists of this country to serve their selfish interests – a grave act of betrayal against the sovereignty of our country..

A Heart of Obedience

A Heart of Obedience

by Joyce Meyer - posted October 27, 2016

But thank God, though you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient with all your heart to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed
- Romans 6:17

Paul wrote that the believers in Rome were obedient with all their heart. This was important because it is possible to have halfhearted obedience—to be reluctantly obedient in behavior, but not be joyfully obedient with all your heart.
Obeying what God says is not just a matter of putting on a show, but a matter of having the right attitude. When you really want to please the Lord, you can’t wait to follow His direction and instructions for your life.
I want to encourage you to come up higher in your obedience. Be quick to obey, radical and joyful in your obedience. Don’t be the kind of person God has to deal with for weeks just to get you to do the simplest little thing. Gladly do what God asks of you.
Obedience is more than a spiritual obligation—it is a spiritual opportunity! Your obedience to God will ultimately be rewarded. Obedience sows the seed necessary to bring another blessing into your life. You can never outgive God; He will always reward your seeds of obedience.
A heart of obedience results in the blessing of God on your life.

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

--Psalm 51:12

If you’re not really happy with your life today, maybe you think a change would be good.

So many of us fall into the trap of thinking that changing our jobs, changing our appearance, or changing our environment will make us happy. But it just isn’t true!

All of these external changes may temporarily improve your life but none of them can change your life. None can make you truly happy. You may move around. You may change cars. You may even change jobs. But you know what? Wherever you go, it’s the same old you, right?

It’s not that your circumstances or your surroundings need to change. It’s your heart that needs to change. It’s your heart that needs a new birth.

The Bible is pretty clear when it talks about our hearts. In Jeremiah 17:9, it says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick.” The heart, according to the Bible, is not good!

Which means your heart needs a spiritual change. I’m not talking about a resolution—promising to be better, do better, or live better. I’m talking about a revolution!

It’s something so radical, so dramatic, that it’s like beginning life all over again! It’s a new beginning! It’s an inward change! Your heart undergoes a spiritual transformation when God takes it and transplants it with His love and His heart.

So my challenge to you today is to let God transform your heart. Realize that no external change can truly make you joyful or fulfilled. Only a heart transformed by God will. So let Him create a new beginning in you today!

Ask God to restore the joy of your heart today.

When It’s Time for Something New

When It’s Time for Something New

by Joyce Meyer - posted October 26, 2016

To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter or purpose under heaven.
- Ecclesiastes 3:1

When what you are doing no longer gives you joy—when there is no life in it for you anymore— that is a strong indication that God is finished with whatever He was doing through you. Prayer will help you find out if God is leading you to make changes.
Some individuals don’t have any joy because they are trying to do things God is not calling them to do anymore. They are simply trying to ride a dead horse, so to speak. My advice is this: When the horse isn’t moving, it is time to dismount!
Seek God’s direction and have the boldness to say, “I did things a certain way for a long time, and I was grateful to have the chance to do it, but this isn’t the way God is leading me now. I believe God is leading me to do something new.”
Prayer of Thanks: Father, thank You for showing me when it is time to do something new. I trust You to lead and guide me, and I know that joy always comes with Your plan. I thank You in advance that You will make it abundantly clear which direction You want me to take.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

Revelation 21:1

For many years of my life, I lived in West Palm Beach, Florida. I used to love taking walks along the beach and looking at the ocean. Listening to the waves crash on the shore was so relaxing.

That was my perspective from land. But if I had been the captain of a boat out on the water, I’d probably have had a very different view of the ocean. Those same waves that lap up on the sandy beach have been responsible for many sunken ships and many deaths.

This was the perspective that the biblical authors had of the ocean, especially the apostle John, who was a fisherman before he wrote the book of Revelation. To them, the ocean was chaotic, dangerous, and deadly. Yes, the sea was a source of income. But John would’ve never lost his healthy fear of the sea, which could go from provider to killer with a simple change of the winds.

So when John writes that in the new heaven, “the sea was no more,” what he really means is that chaos will be eradicated. That which caused so much destruction would be gone and order would prevail.

Perhaps today, there’s a good amount of chaos in your life. Look to the One who will one day bring order to our chaotic world to make a miracle out of any mess you have. Place your life in His hands today and trust Him to do something big!

Let God create order in your chaotic life by giving Him control and trusting in His promise to make all things new!

Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement)…

Acts 4:36

When people think about you, what are some characteristics that you believe come to their mind? If we’re really honest, you and I do care about our reputation. But the message we often hear today is, “Don’t worry what people think about you, just be yourself.” And while it’s okay to be rejected by others for the right reasons, there are many who believe they have a license to have a bad reputation because they’re just ‘being their self’.

But did you know that God cares about your reputation? Proverbs 22:1 says “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” And Luke 2:52 makes it a point to say that Jesus increased “in favor with God and man.”

Joseph was such an encourager that his friends began to call him Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.” So how are you known among your peers? When they think of you, are there impressions generally positive or negative?

Gaining and keeping a good reputation takes time and effort. You have to invest relationally in people and be intentional in being someone whom they consider trustworthy. But that investment will pay huge dividends in the form of vibrant, sanctifying relationships!

BUILD YOUR REPUTATION AS SOMEONE WHO IS EXCEPTIONALLY TRUSTWORTHY.

The Silence of the Saviour

by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.”
Luke 23:8–10
There is an interesting contrast in the story of the response of Jesus to the two leaders who examined Him on the day of His crucifixion. Jesus interacted with Pilate, answering his questions and pointing out that it was His submission to God’s plan and not the soldiers of Rome that had brought Him to the cross. “Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin” (John 19:11).
Yet when He was sent to Herod, Jesus did not respond to the king at all. Herod wanted Jesus to put on a demonstration for him, like a magician entertaining an audience. But the evil king had already had an opportunity to receive the truth from John the Baptist. Instead of repenting however, he responded by cutting off the head of the prophet who had the courage to criticize him for his immoral behavior. Since Herod had already rejected the truth, He did not receive any further instruction.
God owes us nothing, but He does present us with the opportunity to respond to Him. He does not promise, however, to continually extend those opportunities if we refuse to respond. It is a matter of stewardship. There is no reason to expect more from God if we are not using what we already have. “If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” (Luke 16:11).
Today’s Growth Principle:
If we do not respond to the truth we already have, we have no reason to expect further truth.

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Romans 12:6-8

One undeniable truth that I find in the Scripture is that each member of the body of Christ is gifted in a very unique way. Some may have the gift of prophecy and are able to proclaim the truth of God with power and conviction. Some may have the gift of serving… others teaching… others exhortation… and so on.

The point is that I am not you and you are not me. We are different! And God has made us different so that each of us can make a unique contribution to his Kingdom on earth.

God wants you to be honest with yourself about what you can contribute to the body. He never meant for you to try and fit a square peg into a round hole. So many times I’ve seen faithful men and women of Christ who aren’t content with how God gifted them. So they end up getting burnt out in a ministry role that just wasn’t for them.

So pray and ask God to reveal to you how he has gifted you specifically. When you begin to understand that and are comfortable with who you are, your life will make an even greater impact for Christ!

Accept who you are and be who God made you.

Passing the Buck

by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean. And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.”
Luke 23:5–7
The famously blunt and plain-spoken Harry Truman was a relatively obscure senator from Missouri when President Franklin Roosevelt tapped him to be his running mate for his fourth term. The men only met twice in the eighty-two days between Roosevelt taking the oath of office in January and his death in April. Suddenly Truman was thrust into a position of great responsibility. Meeting with reporters shortly after he had been sworn in, Truman said, “Boys, if you ever pray, pray for me now. I don’t know if you fellas ever had a load of hay fall on you, but when they told me what happened yesterday, I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me.”
The Second World War was winding down, but Truman was faced with leading the nation to final victory over Germany and Japan. Among the difficult decisions he made was the one to drop the atomic bombs—a program so secret he hadn’t been briefed on it even as Vice President—on Japan to hasten the end of the war. Truman quickly learned that while there were many to advise him, there had to be a place where decisions were made and responsibility taken. He put a sign on his desk that read “The Buck Stops Here.”
The temptation to pass the buck has been with us ever since the Garden of Eden. Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent. Instead of looking for ways to avoid responsibility and accountability, we need to be diligent and faithful in our efforts.
Today’s Growth Principle:
If we accept responsibilities rather than trying to shift them to others, we can do great things for God.

No Fault in Jesus

by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King. And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it. Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.”
Luke 23:2–4
Dr. W. A. Criswell began his ministry in a small town in Oklahoma. He would often preach on Saturdays to the crowds gathered at the farmer’s market or at the courthouse. One day as he preached, Criswell asked the people why they were not attending church. He later said, “That was a rhetorical, question, and then I added, ‘If you can give any good reason why you separate yourself from the people of God and why you don’t go to church, come up here and tell us why don’t you go.’” To his shock, person after person began to line up and pour out their complaints about what they had experienced in churches.
Criswell said that he went home weeping. He was filled with sorrow at what he had witnessed. Then He said that as he thought about it and prayed, he realized something important. “They had much to say against the preacher, much to say against the deacon, much to say against the church, much to say against the people, but I happened finally to realize not one, not one in all of that throng, not one ever said a word against the Lord Jesus Christ—I find in Him no fault at all.”
We have a perfect Saviour. Only a sinless, spotless Lamb could be the sacrifice for the sins of the world, for otherwise Jesus would have had to pay for His own sins rather than ours. No matter how He is examined, no one ever finds fault with Jesus.
Today’s Growth Principle:
Give thanks today for the flawless Saviour who gave His life as ransom for your sins.

The Very Son of God

The Very Son of God

by Dr. Paul Chappell
“And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.”
Luke 22:68–71
Skeptics often claim that Jesus did not say He was the Son of God, but that is simply a deliberate misreading of the Scriptures. When Jesus repeatedly declared that He was sent from God, that God was His Father, and that He was one with God, the Jewish leaders who hated Him and wanted to put Him to death understood clearly that Jesus claimed He was the Messiah and the Son of God. And it is vital that we not forget His nature and character especially as the world around us lowers their view of Jesus.
Charles Spurgeon said, “If we err concerning the Deity of Christ, then we err everywhere. The gospel that does not preach a Divine Savior is no gospel at all; it is like a ship without a rudder, the first opposing wind that blows will drive it to destruction, and woe are the souls that are trusting to it! Only the shoulders of the almighty God can ever carry the enormous weight of human guilt and human need.”
Jesus was a man, but He was far more than that. He was at the same time completely God. “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9). Jesus is to be exalted, worshiped, praised, and adored. We can never hold Him too highly in hearts and minds. All of our best efforts to praise Him fall short of what He deserves. He alone is worthy of all glory and honor and praise.
Today’s Growth Principle:
We need a renewed sense of awe and wonder at the amazing grace of our Divine Saviour.
