CRAFTS

GOSPEL MEGAPHONE MATERIALS: colorful paper cups, pipe cleaners (cut in half), memory verse printed on sticker paper, glue   To prepare, use a razor blade/cutter to cut out the bottoms of the cups. Poke holes in the cup where kids can insert their pipe cleaners    INSTRUCTIONS:   1)    Distribute the bottomless paper cups and memory verse on sticker paper. Let the children stick their verse.     2)    Distribute the pipe cleaners. WELCOME         ACTIVITY	Materials: echo microphone toy   Form one big circle for the class. Tell the children that you are holding a microphone. A microphone helps you say something very loud even if you don’t have a loud voice. Tell them that Jesus wants us to tell other people about him and what he did on the cross. BIBLE STORY	Acts 2 Anytime: No Matter When (Peter)    Bible storytelling via magnetic characters. NARRATOR: Thousands of people went to Jerusalem to celebrate a Jewish holiday called Pentecost. They came from many countries and spoke many different languages. Jesus’ disciples were staying there. They were praying together.    Suddenly, a noise filled the room. It sounded like a strong wind blowing. The Holy Spirit appeared as tongues of fire on each of them.    They started talking in languages they did not know. The people in Jerusalem heard the noise and came to see what was happening.    The crowd was amazed and asked, “How are they able to speak our languages?”   PETER: The prophets told us this would happen.    Then Peter told them about God’s plan.    PETER: God sent Jesus to save everyone from the bad things we have done.    PEOPLE: What should we do?    PETER: Ask Jesus to forgive you for your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

 

	On that day, 3,000 people believed in Jesus. The disciples baptized all of them. Peter and the disciples are a good example of people who were ready to preach the gospel anytime.
DISCUSSION	Let’s Talk About It! (Teachers, sit with your children so you can easily pray with and for them as you do your huddle.)   à What are the Jews celebrating in Jerusalem?  (They are celebrating the Passover.)   à What happened while the disciples were praying?  (A loud noise filled the room and a strong wind entered. The Holy Spirit came on them.)   à Who preached the gospel to many people?  (Peter preached the gospel.)   Peter stood up and preached the first  gospel. Before the Spirit had given him special abilities Peter had been a fisherman from Galilee. Now he was able to speak clearly and explain the Old Testament scriptures about Jesus. He explained how Jesus of Nazareth had been sent by God and that they had crucified him. He pointed out that even the revered King David had looked forward to the coming of the Messiah. Peter was able to preach the gospel anytime because the Holy Spirit was there to help him.
OPTIONAL ACTIVITY	PREACH IT   MATERIAL: inflatable globe   Gather the children to sit in a circle.  Play the song, "Go!" from above as they pass around the inflatable globe.  Randomly pause the music. 	Dear God,     Thank you for sending us the Holy Spirit to help us. Thank you for what you did on the cross for us. Help me tell everyone about you. In Jesus name, Amen.

Week 1 | Teachers’ Devotion

WORD: Acts 2

 

Was there a time when you were asked to do something you knew you could not do on your own or you were not prepared to do? Whom did you ask help from?

 

For this series, we aim to encourage the kids to look into the life of Bible characters and be inspired by their lifestyle of evangelism, so that the they will preach the gospel no matter where God sends them, no matter who they talk to, no matter when, and no matter what they go through.

 

The gospel is not just a matter of message, but also a matter of power. Whoever hears it and decides to believe in Jesus immediately experiences the power of God. The gospel is not just a story - it is THE story of all of mankind. It is where our very existence is anchored. Therefore, God calls us to be ready anytime He presents the opportunity to preach it. 1 Peter 3:15 (TLB) says “Quietly trust yourself to Christ your Lord, and if anybody asks why you believe as you do, be ready to tell him, and do it in a gentle and respectful way.” 

 

So how do we become ready to preach the gospel anytime? 

 

1.        Believe God’s promise. God has promised that His sons and daughters shall receive power through the Holy Spirit. During the Pentecost, Peter declared that this promise from the Old Testament already came to pass.

 

Acts 2:16-17a (ESV): But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy…”

 

2.        Enjoy God’s presence. Preparation and our Bible knowledge are helpful tools in sharing the gospel, but these are not the main reasons why we as believers are equipped to minister anytime. In fact, Peter was able to minister effectively despite being untrained because he spent time with Jesus and learned from Him:

 

Acts 4:13 (NLT) The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

 

3.        Obey God’s command. Sharing the gospel and making disciples is not a suggestion but a command given to each and every believer. God commands this because He has given His sons and daughters the power to do it anytime He calls us to do so. Because Peter obeyed, 3000 souls were saved!

The Riches of God

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”
Ephesians 2:4–7

Throughout history there have been many different forms of wealth. Often coins made from precious metals like silver or gold were the way people kept their riches. Others held stocks in companies or owned large amounts of land. According to Forbes magazine, in 2016 there were nearly two thousand people in the world worth at least a billion dollars. The collective wealth of that group exceeds six trillion dollars. Yet, even these vast human riches pale in comparison to the riches of God.
We would not be impressed by someone who claimed wealth by virtue of owning huge piles of asphalt and concrete. Those common materials are used for paving roads. But when John saw his vision of Heaven, he found a material of great value used for that ordinary purpose: “And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass” (Revelation 21:21).
There is no human standard by which we can measure God’s resources because we have nothing to which we can compare His wealth. And even greater than physical resources are the unlimited reserves of mercy and grace that He possesses. The greatest wonder of all is that He offers us the opportunity to share in His wealth through the sacrifice of Jesus. “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).
 

Today’s Growth Principle: 

The immeasurable riches of God are freely made available to us through His amazing grace.

God Is on Your Side

For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the humble with salvation and adorn the wretched with victory.
—Psalm 149:4 AMPC

If you never face trials, you will never have to exercise your faith. But even when facing hard times, you shouldn’t dread life. Isaiah 8:13 (AMPC) says, The Lord of hosts—regard Him as holy and honor His holy name [by regarding Him as your only hope of safety], and let Him be your fear and let Him be your dread [lest you offend Him by your fear of man and distrust of Him].
If you dread life and fear people, you are not trusting the Lord to save you. Keep your reverential fear and awe of God; dread displeasing Him, but don’t fear anything else. If God is for you, who can be against you? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37 NIV).

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.  --1 Thessalonians 4:17 I don’t know if these are the final days or not, but I do know that I want to be found walking faithfully with the Lord when He comes back. Just like Enoch in Scripture, I want to be well-pleasing to God and be a witness for Him. A decade ago there was a movie entitled A Walk to Remember, a beautiful and uplifting story of life and love. I want to talk with you today about a walk that’s really worth remembering, because it’s an eternal walk of life and love with Jesus Christ. First, let me remind you that the Christian life is a life of faith from beginning to end.  You became a child of God by faith…trusting in Christ for your salvation.  And each day you must continue to live by faith in the One Who loves you and died for you. But as you walk by faith with Christ through life, I want to encourage you to take time to look down the corridors of time and realize that you can know with certainty that one day you’ll be with Him in heaven forever! Like our verse today promises, you have an eternity to look forward to of life with God! So don’t let the concerns and pressures of today rob you of the joy of knowing you will one day be living with God…FOREVER!  As you take this eternal walk with Christ, you can be as certain of heaven today as if you’re already there.  Take time today to meditate on that truth…and thank God for this incredible hope! As a child of God, you have an eternity of life with God to look forward to! How to Heal a Nation by Dr. Paul Chappell “And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.” 1 Kings 18:36–38 When Elijah faced the false prophets on Mt. Carmel after three years without rain—the judgment God sent because the people were worshiping Baal instead of Him—he was vastly outnumbered. It didn’t matter! Elijah had spent those three years watching God work miracle after miracle to keep him alive and safe, and he poured out his heart to God in prayer. Elijah even went so far as to have barrels of water poured on the sacrifice and the altar just to make sure everyone who saw what happened realized that it could only be God. Though the wicked Ahab and his wife, Jezebel, had turned the nation away from following God, when the power of God was displayed in answer to Elijah’s prayer, the people immediately recognized that they had witnessed the hand of God in action, and they declared that He alone was truly God. The only cure for a nation is found not in political, economic, or social reform, but in revival. The poet George Liddell wrote: Give me a man of God—one man, True to the vision that he sees, And I will build your broken shrines, And bring the nations to their knees.   Today’s Growth Principle:  What we urgently need today are men and women of faith who know how to get things from God in prayer.

Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.                                              --Proverbs 3:9-10 In the verses above, we see the Scriptural principle of putting first things first. We’re to give the first day of the week to the Lord. We’re to give the first part of the day to Him. And we’re to give the firstfruits of our labor—a tithe—to Him. This is the principle that’s clear in Scripture: We’re to give God off the top of what we’ve been given and what we have earned. Why? To honor Him! The reason we give generously and live generously is to honor God. This should be the primary motive in all that we do as followers of Christ. I would advise you and strongly urge you—if you want God to be in the middle of your financial picture, begin tithing 10% in obedience to Him. Now, I realize you may be having a hard time financially right now. Perhaps you’re between jobs or you’re really struggling with debt and other financial problems in your life. If so, I want to challenge you today to begin obeying God, putting Him first in every area of your life. This includes earning your money honestly, managing your money wisely, and giving your money generously. Then, trust Him for the rest! Be patient…persevere…and know that at the right time, in the right place, God will bless you in the right way because He knows He can trust you with what He gives you! The reason we give generously and live generously is to honor God.

Watch and Pray

“And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Matthew 26:39–41

Three weeks after the “shot heard round the world” started the fighting of the Revolutionary War, American forces advanced on Fort Ticonderoga. The fort had proved vital during the French and Indian War, and the colonists knew that it contained many cannons which they desperately needed to face the much larger British forces. Despite the outbreak of war, when the Americans approached the fort early in the morning of May 9, 1775, there was only a single sentry on duty. He was so inattentive that the Americans took the fort without firing a single shot, winning a crucial victory early in the war.
The Christian life is an ongoing spiritual conflict, and we must be constantly on guard. The devil doesn’t take vacations. He is looking for opportunities to attack, and if we abandon our responsibilities and do not take them seriously, defeat will follow. Dr. John R. Rice said, “Prayer is a duty expressly commanded for every Christian, all the time, and about everybody and everything. Not to pray is a sin, the sin of disobedience to the plain and often repeated command of God! Lack of prayer is a sin. Doubtless all of our sins and mistakes and failures are prayer-sins, prayer mistakes, and prayer-failures.” We do not have the power on our own to defeat the enemy. We must have God’s help through prayer if are to have any hope of victory.
 

Today’s Growth Principle: 

If you begin a day without prayer and watchfulness, you are handing the devil a great opportunity.

Your family must build a financial firewall of wise spending habits

Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.                                              --Proverbs 21:20 Making good choices regarding the legacy and future of your family is vitally important. And as it says in the verse above, it’s foolish just to spend everything you have! We are to save money, as well as spend money. But the problem is that many families today haven’t built the financial firewall of spending money wisely. Their expenses exceed their income…and as a result, they’re bridging the gap with more and more debt! But accumulating excessive debt isn’t wise. And in the limited space I have here, I want to advise you to deal aggressively with paying your creditors. If you have debt that’s grinding you down, if you have debt that creates pressure in your family, if you have debt that keeps you from giving as God would have you give, it’s time you began to take a hard look at your spending habits. So I’d like to ask you today, do your spending habits glorify God? Friend, I challenge you to begin making God a partner in your finances today! Your family must build a financial firewall of wise spending habits.

How We View Sin

“For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.”
Jonah 3:6–8

After spending three days in the great fish God had prepared for him, Jonah must have been an amazing sight to behold when he appeared in Nineveh to preach of the judgment God would send if the people did not repent. It was not, however, Jonah’s appearance but his message that convicted the people of Nineveh. In response to Jonah’s message, the king of Nineveh declared a great demonstration of sorrow for sin—and a commitment to turning away from evil. In response to their heartfelt repentance, God spared the city from destruction.
Charles Spurgeon said, “Repentance is a discovery of the evil of sin, a mourning that we have committed it, a resolution to forsake it. It is, in fact, a change of mind of a very deep and practical character, which makes the man love what once he hated, and hate what once he loved.” One of the great problems in the church in our day is that we just don’t think sin is that bad. At least we act that way when it comes to the sins of our own lives. The sins of others may stir us to indignation, but our own sins we tolerate quite well. We need a renewed disgust and hatred of sin, viewing it as an outrage to our holy God.
 

Today’s Growth Principle: 

When we see sin the way God sees it, we will flee from temptation and walk in righteousness.
