What makes a good preacher?

by Ptr. Graham
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

A fellow walked up to me one time after a church service and told me, “Pastor, when you were preaching your message today, it felt like you had me in mind. It was like a bullet right through me.” So I told him, “Well I was shooting down in a hole!”

To tell you the truth, I hear this all the time. People send me emails and ask, “Did someone tell you about my situation? It’s like you knew me!” So I tell them I can’t take the credit for it. It’s the Spirit of God in them working with the Word of God. And as today’s verse says, the Word of God pierces to our very core.

So what’s the role of a preacher? Well, it’s essentially to get out of the way and let God do His thing. It’s to convey the message of the Bible in such a way that it’s the one doing the work—not with clever words, but “in demonstration of the Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2:4).

Put yourself under a solid, biblical preacher whose sole purpose is to get out of the way so God’s Word can impact your life. When you do, you’ll find yourself maturing in your faith as the Scripture does its work in your heart!

PLACE YOURSELF UNDER A PREACHER OF THE WORD WHO WILL ALLOW GOD’S WORD TO DO THE WORK OF MAKING AN IMPACT IN YOUR LIFE.
