Even in the Hard Times

Even in the Hard Times
Today's Scripture:
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4, NIV.
Today's Word:
When Moses was born, the king ordered that all the male babies were to be killed. You can imagine how devastated this mother must have been. She could have easily given up, but instead, she chose to believe that God was still in control. She put Moses into a little basket and sent him down the Nile River. It just so happened that Pharaoh’s daughter was out taking a bath - at the right place and the right time. She heard the cries coming from the basket. She opened it up and saw baby Moses and fell in love with the boy. She was so excited and said, “I’m going to take him as my own.” She looked at her maids and said, “We need to find somebody that can nurse the baby.”
One of the maids said, “I know just who to get.” She went and found who? Moses’ mother. Moses’ mother was not only able to raise her son, but she got paid for doing it on top of that. Only God could orchestrate all of that.
Today, remember that even in loss, heartache or disappointment, God will order your steps. He’ll line up the right people and the right opportunities and lead you into victory all the days of your life.
Prayer for Today:
Father, thank You for being with me even in the hard times. I praise You because You are faithful, and I know You are leading and guiding me into victory all the days of my life in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Function Follows Form
“There are different spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, and yet the same Lord is served. There are different types of work to do, but the same God produces every gift in every person.” (1 Corinthians 12:4-6 GW)

In architecture, form follows function. Tell me what you want to use the building for, and I’ll tell you how to build it. But in human beings, it’s the exact opposite. Function follows form. Figure out how God shaped you and how he wired you, what he’s given you in spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experience. Then you’ll know what you’re supposed to do with your life.
Did you know that God has specific work for you to do while you’re on this planet? God doesn’t put people on Earth without giving them a life’s work. Your life’s work involves your job or your career. Work is a part of God’s purpose for your life. He didn’t put you on Earth just to be placeholder and use up resources. He put you here to make a contribution, and your contribution is based on your SHAPE.
God never gives you work to do without giving you the ability to do it. That’s why you have spiritual gifts. They’re lying dormant in you until you decide to discover them and develop them.
Many surveys have shown that most Americans are in the wrong job, and it’s because they’re not shaped to do it! They’re in a job primarily for economic reasons, not because it’s fulfilling or they’re good at it or they’re shaped for it.
If you’re in a job that’s not using the shape that God has given you, then get out of it. Life is too short to waste it on a job that doesn’t express who you were made to be. God did not put you on Earth to make money. What matters is what God has shaped you to do.
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, “There are different spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them. There are different ways of serving, and yet the same Lord is served. There are different types of work to do, but the same God produces every gift in every person” (GW).
Knowing your spiritual gifts answers questions like, “What’s God’s will for my life? What does God want me to do with my life? What kind of job, what kind of career should I have? What should be my ministry? What should be my mission in the world?” Gifts explain where you should be headed. They shape your work.

Talk It Over
  • What percentage of your SHAPE do you think you are using in your job or career? What percentage are you using in ministry?

  • What matters more to you in your career: using your SHAPE or making money? What changes do you need to make in response to your answer?
