The Unfailing Word of God
by Dr. Paul Chappell
“The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.”
Luke 16:16–17
When Alexander Duff was on his way to India to serve as a missionary, his ship sank near the shore. While Duff and his party were able to swim to safety on shore, all of his belongings, including the eight hundred books he had brought to study and use in teaching and preaching were lost. The next morning, walking along the beach Duff found one book had survived—his Bible. Though he lacked the other resources he had hoped to use in his work, Duff built a school on the sure foundation of the Word of God that educated thousands of young students and made a great impact on India.
The Word of God is powerful because God’s nature and character ensure that it will never fail. The sad reality is that most of us have had painful first-hand experience with someone not keeping the promises that they have made to us. It really hurts to find out that we cannot rely on someone we trusted, but that never happens with God. In his prayer at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem Solomon said, “Blessed be the LORD, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant” (1 Kings 8:56).
Every part of God’s Word is faithful and true and unfailing, because it is a reflection of Him. Promises are only as good as the people who make them. And that is why we can fully rely on everything the Bible says. The Christian life can be based on this sure foundation.

Today’s Growth Principle:
The Bible is worthy of our full faith and confidence, for as the Word of God, it never fails.
